Rooftops for Two
The house and garage get new roofs
The roof is fundamental to the integrity of a building. Not only does it need to keep out moisture, but it should minimize energy loss including cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter. It also adds beauty and value to a property.
Shingles are made from a variety of materials including asphalt, slate, tile, wood shakes, and more. During the selection process always consider the climate, weather, environmental factors, and roof pitch to increase the roof’s overall effectiveness.
Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material used in the country, and Spillane chose them for the house and garage. He opted for the fiberglass variety, which are topped with ceramic granules that shield the product from harmful UV rays. They have a higher fire rating, too, which generally carries a longer warranty.
Within days, the old shingles were removed from both buildings and replaced with a layer of roofing felt. The flashing was installed to keep water from getting into places it doesn’t belong, followed by placement of the new shingles and ridge caps.
Both roofs are projected to last the homeowner between 15 and 20 years. Although asphalt roofs are considered maintenance-free, professional inspections and minor repairs following a storm can help extend that lifespan.
